How to Get Ghostwriting Jobs

Want to change up your writing career? Try Ghostwriting! In this article, I will show you no fluff ways to get ghostwriting jobs!

What is Ghostwriting?

Ghostwriting is anytime a writer creates a written document, article, or book that does not credit their name. However, the ghostwriter does get paid.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “But Aven why would anyone want to write and not have their name on their work?”

There’s a few reasons which could be:

  • The person who has the book idea may not be creative or may not enjoy writing.
  • They may not want to go through marketing, editing, and proof-reading.
  • The ghostwriter may not want to be a published author.
  • The ghostwriter may enjoy creating work for others.

Personally, I enjoy ghost writing because I find it fun and different and you never know what topic you will be writing next.

Another reason why I enjoy ghostwriting is that I get to learn something new! Every project requires in-depth research which means I get to grow my knowledge base too!

How to Get Started In Finding Ghostwriting Jobs

  1. Get Niche Specific

The first step before all else is to find a niche that you want to specialize in ghostwriting.

Once you have your niche you need to sit down and get piece of paper and ask yourself why someone would want to hire your servives. HINT: How can you help their business or goal? What benefits would they have?

Next you need to research competitors and see how your service can outbeat the competition.

2. Create a Website and Social Media Accounts

The next step is to create a website and social media accounts that reflect what your business is and what you do. For example let’s say you are a cupcake blogger that also reads tarot you may want to consider something like “CupcakeBloggerTarot”.

Once you have a name you need to think of which social media channels you want to be on. I personally suggest Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.

About 90% of my traffic comes from Pinterest and Twitter. I also love Twitter since they have a great writing community!

Your social media names should be similar and should also reflect your brand.

Now it’s time to create a website. If you cannot afford self-hosting for now I suggest using a free wordpress blog.

This will help you get a feel for how WordPress works without bombarding you with alot of techie stuff for now.

You can also set up your free WordPress to rank on google. However, keep in mind that you will not get as good of a rank unless you have a self-hosted website.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you own a domain and self-hosted site it is yours entirely.

If you have a free website WordPress can shut you down if they don’t like your content or just because they feel like it.

Your website needs four pages to start:

  1. An “About Me” page: Explain your story, your expertise, and benefits that your clients will reap when working with you.
  2. A page that lists your policies, and services, and rates or packages
  3. A page that has any links to articles, or publications on other sites that you worked for or posted on. Also known as a portfolio page.
  4. A contact page
  5. Social Media Kit- I personally advise ghostwriters to create a social media kit that explains your mission and displays your social media accounts. This is a fabulous tool in case brands want to work with you.

3. Branding

Yes you need to have a brand in order to stand out. It gives your ghostwriting business a face and draws your dream clients in.

Here are a few branding tips:

  • Create a color scheme of 3 colors. Change your color scheme as the season changes.
  • Think of symbols that may be meaningful to you and use it for your brand such as marble and rose for me.
  • Use your brand colors and symbols to create engaging social media posts that your clients will be attracted to.
  • Start thinking about your audience. Who is your target? What do they do for a career? What do they struggle with? What might they be interested in?
  • Follow competitor brands and brands that relate to your niche to help you appear in front of your ideal audience.

4. Rates

Deciding how much you are going to charge is extremely crucial to your ghostwriting success. Here are some tips:

  • Create packages and offer a discount of no more than 10% this establishes a sense of loyalty. Who doesn’t love a discount?!
  • Take into account taxes, bills, and any other monthly payments you have each month. Make sure to check with your local state and federal organizations to find out how much you need to set aside for freelancer taxes.
  • I charge per word and per article depending on how the client wants to be charged. But you can also charge per article or book, whichever you feel is best for your needs.

5. Finding Ghostwriting Jobs

The section of the article you have been waiting for! Here are a few ways to find ghostwriting jobs.

Upwork

A popular platform for freelancers. You create a profile and use tags to display yourself to potential invites from clients that are hiring. You can also add any certifications you have and any education that relates to your field and niche.

You get 20 connects to start and then will need to invest 15 cents per connect or get a bundlefo them to use when you run out so that you can continue to bid on jobs.

Fiverr

If you’re looking to get paid your worth and have an overflow of clients you most likely will not see that from Fiverr. Primarily people go on Fiverr to find cheap work from five to ten dollars at most.

Now bearing that in mind I would suggest doing small writing projects to get reviews if you need them.You can also use the money you earn on Fiverr in order to fund your connects on Upwork.

Emailing Prospective Clients

I used to cringe at emailing leads or prospective clients but in truth, you are much more likely to find your dream client through direct email.

I promise crafting a article that introduces your services isn’t as painful as you might think.

Here is how to craft an email to potential clients:

  1. Visit their website first and notice if they have a blog and if any articles are current.
  2. Craft Your Email :

Dear [Business Owner name or HR]

My name is [insert your name or pen name] and I am writing to you to introduce my ghost writing services today.

Start a new paragraph include three short but to the point sentences that introduce your passion for your niche and how you began:

I am a intuitive life coach who began my journey five years ago. I since then have gained extensive knowledge and expertise in holsitic and spirtual practices to help clients overcome life adverisites, connect to their beloved pets, or loved ones that have crossed over.

Start another paragraph and write three to four sentences about how your service can benefit them and their clients:

My ghostwriting services can help your clients by providing insightful, mindful, and entertaining posts about spirituality, holistic approaches to healing so they can live their most awakened and productive lives possible in order to achieve their goals. Next with SEO Optimization, I will help your website better rank on google so that your site appears in front of your ideal audience.

The final paragraph should be about contact and any files you attach. ke so:

I can be reached via email, or phone if you would like to set up a time at your convenience, to discuss my ghostwriting services further. I have also attached my resume for your viewing preferences.

Ghostwriting Jobs That Are Scams

Most likely you will come across a job that is a scam. Here are things to be wary of:

  • Companies that ask for countless samples.
  • A client who tries to scrap you and offers you a lower price than what you agreed on. No honey no!
  • Asking for your credit card or debit card number that isn’t a legit site such as Upwork.
  • A business that has no website or a very outdated one. Trust me you will know when you see it.
  • A business that asks for your address, social security number that isn’t Upwork, or a legit site.
  • Businesses that only pay by check. Businesses now use a form of payment such as Paypal, Transferwise, or Stripe, or similar but always do your research on the payment company and the business.
  • Businesses that swear to pay you but keep hesitating. This is why you need a contract in place for every client to protect you from fraud.
